Family Pictures: What to Know and How to Prepare

How much do family pictures cost?

Family photography can vary in price depending on the photographer’s experience, location, and the package you choose. At Kristen Elizabeth Photography, a family session is priced at $400. This includes at least 50 beautifully edited family pictures delivered in a hand-curated online gallery. Additionally, clients will receive a 15% discount on prints through White House Custom Color, making it easy to transform your gallery into tangible memories. More on that later.

How do you prepare for your family pictures?

After you book your family pictures with Kristen Elizabeth Photography, we will discuss the vision for your session. Do you want candid moments, posed shots, or a mix of both? I will send you a questionnaire with these questions to better understand what you want so we can capture the perfect family photos you want, creating treasured family pictures.

One of the questionnaire questions asks about where you want your pictures taken. If you have a specific location in mind, you can include that. If you don’t have a location in mind, don’t worry! I’ll send you a guide with over 50 locations around the Twin Cities metro. I can also help narrow down the options based on your vision.

I’ll also send you a session prep guide with information about what to bring, how to prepare your children for the photo shoot, and many other excellent pre-session tips. I take the mental load off of you by providing as much information as possible so that picture day is easy-going and fun!

What to wear for family pictures?

Figuring out what to wear for family pictures can be overwhelming, especially when you have to plan multiple outfits. Don’t worry though! You’ll also receive my Style Guide! My number one tip when it comes to wardrobe is that coordination is more important than matching. Start by choosing a color palette that compliments the season and setting of your photos. Neutral and earth tones often photograph beautifully but don’t shy away from adding pops of color through accessories or layering. This way, your family pictures will look harmonious and stylish.

Avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns, as these can distract from the focal point: your family. Textures like knits or linen can add visual interest without overpowering the image. Lastly, make sure everyone’s clothing is comfortable and weather-appropriate. Comfortable family members make for more natural and relaxed photos.

Where to get family pictures taken?

The location of your family photos sets the tone for the entire session. Popular choices include parks, open fields, or urban backdrops for a more modern feel. Consider meaningful locations like your backyard or a favorite family hangout spot to add a personal touch and make your family pictures even more special.

Kristen Elizabeth Photography specializes in capturing families in natural, relaxed settings around Minneapolis and the Twin Cities. Whether it’s a vibrant fall landscape or a breezy summer evening by the water, your session will reflect your family’s unique personality and connection.

Where can I get my pictures printed?

Printing your photos brings them to life, turning digital files into timeless keepsakes. At Kristen Elizabeth Photography, I’ve partnered with White House Custom Color. This service is seamlessly integrated into your gallery and offers clients professional-grade prints with a 15% discount. High-quality family pictures become cherished pieces of home décor.

Where should I place my pictures in my house?

Displaying family photos can enhance the warmth and personality of your home. Here are some ideas:

  • Living Room: Place a large family portrait above the couch or fireplace for a striking focal point.
  • Hallways: Create a gallery wall with a mix of candid and posed photos to bring life to transitional spaces. This is a great way to display different family pictures.
  • Bedrooms: Add a pair of matted prints above the bed for a serene, personalized touch.
  • Entryways: Welcome guests with a curated arrangement of smaller framed photos.
  • Home Offices: Keep loved ones close with a few framed pictures on your desk or in a cozy corner.

By choosing the right spaces and arrangements, your family photos can become an integral part of your home’s decor. They’ll remind you daily of the moments and people who matter most.
