There’s something about pregnancy that feels like it will last forever. One day, you’re feeling those little kicks, daydreaming about who your baby will become. And the next? You’re holding them in your arms, wondering where the time went. This is why capturing these moments with maternity photos can be so special.
I’ve heard from so many moms who thought they’d remember everything. The way their belly curved, how they felt, but as the months passed, the little details blurred. And I’ve also heard the regret. The moms who tell me they wished they had taken maternity photos but didn’t because they felt too tired, too busy, or didn’t think it mattered at the time.
That’s why maternity photography is so important. It freezes time. It lets you look back years from now and remember what this season felt like. So when is the right time to take maternity photos? Let’s talk about it.
When to Take Maternity Photos
The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. Your belly is beautifully rounded, but you’re still comfortable enough to move and pose naturally.
- First baby? Your baby bump might not pop for a while, so scheduling closer to 30–34 weeks works best.
- Second (or third, or fourth…)? Your baby bump may pop sooner, so 27–30 weeks could be perfect.
- Expecting twins? Plan for 25–29 weeks since your belly will grow more quickly.
Keep in mind that every pregnancy is different! Some moms feel great at 36 weeks, while others start feeling uncomfortable earlier. If you’re unsure, the best time to book? Now. The sooner we get your session on the calendar, the better.

Factors to Consider When Scheduling Your Maternity Photos
Timing is key, but there are a few other things to think about when planning your session.
1. How You’re Feeling
Pregnancy is unpredictable. Some moms feel amazing at 30 weeks, while others are already dealing with swollen feet and back pain. If you’re feeling great and want to document your bump earlier, go for it. If you’d rather wait until later, we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.
2. The Look You Want
Every season brings a different kind of beauty. Dreaming of golden fields and soft sunsets? Late summer or early fall is perfect. Prefer cozy layers and an intimate indoor or outdoor photo shoot? Winter might be your season. Think about the overall feel you want for your maternity photos.
3. What You Want to Wear
A fitted dress that highlights your bump? A flowing gown that moves beautifully in the wind? Something casual and cozy? Whatever you choose to wear in your maternity photos, make sure it makes you feel confident and comfortable! If you need help, I’m always happy to offer guidance and advice.
4. Including Your Partner or Kids
While this is a special moment for you, it’s also an important time for your family. Whether it’s your partner, your older kids, or even a four-legged friend, we can plan for your maternity photo shoot to include the people (and pets) who mean the most to you.
5. Life Happens
Babies don’t always follow our schedules. If you’re high-risk, carrying multiples, or just feeling like your baby might make an early entrance, it’s best to schedule your session earlier!
